Industry research from the International Carwash Association estimates roughly 17,500 conveyor (tunnel), 29,000 in-bay automatic, and 16,250 self-service locations — over 62,000 sites nationwide. The sector employs more than 220,000 people.
By revenue, roll-over / in-bay washes hold the largest share at 43.1%, and payments have gone overwhelmingly digital — 71.4% of revenue is now cashless.

The International Carwash Association's WaterSavers program certifies washes that use no more than 40 gallons of fresh water per car — while a garden hose at home can run through 60+ gallons in about five minutes. The ICA's measured 2018 Water Use Study puts real-world averages even lower: about 30 gallons per car at conveyor (tunnel) washes and 45 gallons at in-bay automatics, with roughly a fifth of that water reclaimed on-site rather than sent to the sewer.
