Most Florida drivers pick a car wash by price and distance. Fewer check what comes with the wash, and that is where washes differ most. We looked at the amenities listed for 1,331 Florida car washes. Free vacuums are now the norm. An undercarriage wash and a clean towel to dry with are not, and those are the two that do the most for your car.
- The undercarriage wash is the rarest amenity we track. Only 360 of 1,331 washes (27%) list one.
- Free vacuums are common, free towels are not. 61% of washes have free vacuums but only 40% have free towels. 294 washes give you a vacuum and nothing to dry the car with.
- A membership doesn't guarantee the full wash. Of the 711 washes that sell monthly memberships, 372 (52%) don't list an undercarriage wash.
- One wash in three has none of the big three. 460 washes (35%) list no free vacuums, no free towels and no undercarriage wash.
- Washes with more amenities are rated higher. Washes offering three or more of the five amenities average 4.41 stars or better. Those with two or fewer average between 4.0 and 4.1.
What Florida Car Washes Actually Offer
Every listing in our directory carries amenity tags. For this study we used the same group as our ratings study: 1,331 tunnel, automatic and self-service car washes with at least 10 Google reviews, in 264 Florida cities. Detailing services are left out, since a detailer isn't expected to have a vacuum bay.
Share of 1,331 Florida car washes that list each amenity. Detailing services excluded.
The top of the list is what you'd expect. Express tunnels have made free vacuums and app payment standard, and more than half of washes now sell a monthly membership. The bottom of the list is where it gets interesting.
The Rarest One: The Undercarriage Wash
An undercarriage wash sprays the underside of the vehicle as it enters the tunnel or bay. Only 27% of Florida car washes list one. Even among washes that sell memberships, about half don't.
Florida doesn't salt its roads, so people assume the underside doesn't matter here. After more than ten years of detailing cars and boats in this state, we'd say the opposite. Near the coast, salt arrives in the air and settles on everything. Beach parking lots and unpaved roads pack sand into the wheel wells and frame rails, where it holds moisture against the metal. If you tow a boat, the ramp puts salt water directly on your brakes, suspension and trailer hitch. None of that comes off in a wash that only cleans what you can see.
If you live within a few miles of the water, launch a boat, or drive on sand, an undercarriage rinse is the amenity worth driving an extra mile for.
Free Vacuums, but Nothing to Dry With
808 washes offer free vacuums. Only 532 offer free towels. That leaves 294 washes where you can clean the carpet for free but have to drive off with a wet car.
That matters more in Florida than in most places. Tunnel blowers leave water in the mirrors, door handles, trunk seams and around the badges. In the summer sun that water dries in minutes and leaves mineral spots, which can etch into the clear coat if they sit. A clean microfiber towel and two minutes of wiping prevents it.
Towels also turned out to be the amenity most closely tied to ratings in our data. Washes that offer them average 4.55 stars, against 4.06 for washes that don't.
| Amenity | Washes with it | Rating with | Rating without | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free towels | 532 | 4.55 | 4.06 | +0.49 |
| Membership plans | 711 | 4.44 | 4.05 | +0.39 |
| Free vacuums | 808 | 4.37 | 4.08 | +0.29 |
| Mobile pay | 779 | 4.37 | 4.09 | +0.28 |
| Restroom | 435 | 4.41 | 4.18 | +0.23 |
| Undercarriage wash | 360 | 4.38 | 4.21 | +0.17 |

More Amenities, Better Ratings
We counted how many of five amenities each wash offers: free vacuums, free towels, undercarriage wash, membership plans and a restroom. The pattern has a clear step in it.
| Amenities offered (of 5) | Washes | Share | Avg. rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | 356 | 27% | 4.02 |
| One | 222 | 17% | 4.11 |
| Two | 122 | 9% | 4.03 |
| Three | 239 | 18% | 4.41 |
| Four | 297 | 22% | 4.53 |
| All five | 95 | 7% | 4.54 |
Average Google rating by number of amenities offered. Only 95 washes in Florida, about 7%, list all five.
Washes with none, one or two amenities all sit around 4.0 to 4.1 stars. At three the average jumps to 4.41, and at four or five it passes 4.5. As we said in the ratings study, amenities travel together, so this doesn't prove that adding towels raises a rating. It does mean the amenity tags on a listing are a quick, reliable way to tell a well-run wash from an average one before you go.
Chains vs. Independents
Most of the gap comes down to who runs the wash. The express chains we track offer nearly every amenity far more often than independent washes do.
| Amenity | Chain locations | Independents |
|---|---|---|
| Membership plans | 98% | 38% |
| Free vacuums | 88% | 52% |
| Mobile pay | 82% | 51% |
| Free towels | 75% | 28% |
| Undercarriage wash | 64% | 15% |
| Restroom | 39% | 31% |
335 tagged chain locations and 996 independent washes. See every chain on our chain directory.
That isn't a knock on independents. Many of the best hand washes and full-service washes in the state are independent, and they dry the car for you. It does mean that at an independent automatic or self-service wash, you should expect to bring your own towel.
What to Do If Your Wash Is Missing One
No free towels. Keep two or three clean microfiber towels in the car. Dry the glass and mirrors first, then the flat panels, and use a separate towel for the door jambs. Never use a gas-station paper towel on paint. Our DIY supplies guide covers which towels are worth buying.
No undercarriage wash. Once a month, or after any beach or boat-ramp trip, stop at a self-service bay and run the high-pressure rinse through each wheel well and along the underside from both sides. It takes about three minutes.
No free vacuums. Sand is the problem in Florida. It works into carpet fibers and wears them from underneath. If your regular wash charges for vacuums, a quick pass at home every couple of weeks does more than one long session a month.
Or switch washes. Every listing on this site shows its amenity tags. You can browse washes with free vacuums, or open your city page and compare what each wash near you includes.
Data: Amenity records and Google ratings for 1,331 tunnel, automatic and self-service car washes with at least 10 Google reviews, listed on BestCarWashFinders.com as of October 2026. Together they cover 264 Florida cities and 788,350 Google reviews. Detailing services are excluded.
Method: Each figure is the share of those washes that list the amenity in our records, or the simple average of their Google ratings. "Chain locations" are the 335 washes belonging to the chains we track; all others are counted as independent.
Limits: Our amenity records come from Google Maps, each wash's website and other public information, so a wash may offer something we haven't recorded. If we've missed an amenity at your wash, tell us and we'll correct the listing for free.
